The Gunite Pool Construction Process, Step by Step

Crew shooting gunite on a large pool and spa shell

A gunite pool is built in stages, and the shell is the heart of it. Here is how the gunite portion comes together, the part South Coast Gunite specializes in, and where it fits in the larger build.

1. Design and layout

Before any concrete is shot, the shape is excavated and the structure is set. Steel reinforcement, or rebar, is tied to the engineered plan, and the plumbing lines are roughed in. Everything is set to spec, because the gunite is only as good as the steel and layout underneath it.

2. Shooting the gunite

The nozzleman places high-strength gunite in one continuous pour, encasing the steel and building the floor, walls, and any raised features. As the shell goes up, the crew hand-carves every radius, step, bench, bond beam, and raised spa. A continuous pour matters here, because stopping and restarting creates cold joints that weaken the shell.

3. Cutting and finishing

Once the shell is shot, the crew cuts and trims it to the exact shape, cleans up the bond beam, and finishes the surface so it is ready for the next trades. This is where good crews separate themselves, because clean shaping now saves problems later.

4. Curing

Curing is the quiet step that determines how strong the shell becomes. The fresh gunite is kept moist so the cement can fully hydrate and reach its design strength over the following days and weeks. On the Gulf Coast, where sun and heat dry concrete fast, proper curing is not optional.

What comes after the shell

After the shell is cured, the rest of the build follows: tile and coping, the deck, equipment, and finally the interior plaster finish. Many of those steps are handled by the pool builder or general contractor. We focus on the shell, because if the structure is right, everything built on top of it lasts.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to shoot a gunite shell?

The actual gunite placement for a typical residential pool is usually completed in a day. The steps around it, steel and plumbing before and curing after, take longer.

Can gunite be shot in the rain?

Light conditions can be worked around, but heavy rain during placement can affect the mix and finish, so shoots are scheduled around the weather. Some moisture afterward actually helps the curing process.

When can plaster go on after gunite?

Plaster goes on after the shell has cured and the tile, coping, and other prep work are done. The shell needs time to gain strength first, so plaster is not applied immediately after the shoot.
