Gunite vs. Shotcrete: What's the Difference?

Crew applying sprayed concrete to a pool and structural project on the Gulf Coast

Ask three pool people what the difference is between gunite and shotcrete and you will get three answers. The confusion is understandable, because both are pneumatically applied concrete, meaning concrete sprayed through a hose at high pressure to form a pool shell. The real difference is when the water gets added.

Gunite is a dry mix

Gunite is the dry-mix method. A dry blend of cement and sand travels through the hose, and the nozzleman adds water right at the nozzle as it is sprayed. That gives a skilled operator a lot of control over the mix and the placement, which is exactly what a residential pool needs. Curves, raised spas, tanning ledges, benches, and bond beams all get hand-carved as the shell goes up.

Shotcrete is a wet mix

Shotcrete is the wet-mix method. The concrete is fully mixed with water before it is pumped and sprayed, so the mix is consistent from the truck. Wet-mix placement is fast and works well on large, flat, or commercial structures where volume and speed matter.

Which one is better for a pool?

Both build a strong shell. The honest answer is that the crew matters more than the label. A properly placed and cured gunite shell and a properly placed and cured shotcrete shell will both outlast the rest of the pool. For the sculpted shapes of a custom residential pool, the nozzle control of dry-mix gunite is hard to beat. For big commercial and aquatic structures, wet-mix shotcrete often makes more sense.

  • Gunite (dry mix): water added at the nozzle, maximum control, ideal for custom residential shapes
  • Shotcrete (wet mix): premixed, fast placement, strong fit for large or commercial work
  • Either method is only as good as the steel, the placement, and the curing behind it

What South Coast Gunite uses

We shoot both, matched to the job. After more than 20 years on the Texas Gulf Coast, the method is never the question. Getting the shell right is. That means correct steel, a continuous pour with no cold joints, and proper curing every time.

Frequently asked questions

Is gunite the same as concrete?

Gunite is concrete, applied a specific way. It is a dry blend of cement and sand sprayed through a hose, with water added at the nozzle. The result is a high-strength concrete shell.

Is gunite or shotcrete stronger?

Neither is automatically stronger. Both can reach high structural strength when they are mixed, placed, and cured correctly. Quality of workmanship and curing matters far more than which method is used.

Does it matter which one is used on my pool?

For most custom residential pools, dry-mix gunite gives the crew the control to hand-shape benches, ledges, and raised features. The bigger factor is hiring an experienced crew that places and cures the shell properly.
